Connection relayed over TLS

connectivitynetwork

The connection has been relayed over TLS which may drastically reduce the quality perceived when the network is degraded.

Description

This indicates that the peer connection uses TURN/TLS relay.

The use of TLS for relaying traffic means the media quality will be degraded (even more than using TURN TCP), especially on poor connections with packet losses.

It is advisable to get users to reconfigure their firewalls or connections to conduct their sessions over UDP instead.

What do we do here?

We look at the active candidate-pairs and see if one has a local or a remote candidate of type “relay” and with type equals to “tls”. We mark this as an Observation if found.

Notes

  • The use of TURN/TCP or TURN/TLS is unadvisable
  • If a user complains and this is observed, then you will likely find other network related problems. Switching to UDP can greatly improve media quality
